As the old saying goes, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in your shoe”. I love this tradition and it's wonderful seeing modern brides always looking at creative ways to incorporate this custom at their wedding. Today, I thought it might be fun to take at look at all the ideas “something blue” could be incorporated into your wedding day!
Blue is thought to bring purity, love and fidelity to a marriage. It represents faithfulness, purity and loyalty. In the past, many brides wear a garter that was blue or had blue trimming or ribbon throughout it or chose to have a handkerchief with blue in it.
Nowadays, brides are getting more creative and there are many options for showing off your something blue. Here are 17 interesting ideas on how you can include the something blue at your wedding!
1. Bouquet
You can have blue flowers in your bouquet. You can choose to include cornflowers, delphiniums, blue posies, anemones, hyacinths or hydrangeas into your bouquet. Other floral colors that look good with blue: white, yellow and pink. To match, think about using blue flowers or ribbon on the boutonniere!
2. Shoes
The traditional idea of blue shoes! Colored shoes are becoming a trend and are a great way to display your something blue. It would look fun and great if the groom is wearing blue socks to bring it all together. If you are looking for a bit less obvious, you can have blue-soled shoes or have something embedded with stones on the sole of your shoes.
3. Lingerie
Your something blue can be your bra, underwear, or any type of undergarment you choose. Though people won't see your something blue, but you (and your hubby) will know where it's hiding. Find a lacy lingerie set in a romantic cornflower blue or one with blue accents.
4. Nail Polish
Make a bold “something blue” fashion statement with a classic blue manicure. The nails can be covered entirely with blue or you can have a blue design on them. You could also opt to have blue polish on your toes.
5. Bridal Combs and Headpieces
Select a bridal comb with blue rhinestones or blue flowers on it. You could also use fun fashion hairclips, flowers, or even pieces of ribbon, depending on how intricate your hairstyle will be.
6. Jewelry or Brooch
Choose earrings, a necklace, locket or a beautiful brooch with blue in it for your wedding day. It's a charming and chic way to add that hint of blue to your wedding.
7. Bridal Purse or Clutch
A blue clutch can act as a perfect wedding accessory and make a great contrast for pictures. It's useful as it can store your wedding day items.
8. Blue Dress
Your “something blue” is a symbol of your fidelity to your future husband, so why not change up that white dress for a blue one? You can even have the groom match your dress with a blue tie. If you still want to stick to the white wedding dress, wear a fun blue lining to the skirt of your dress or sew a blue ribbon into your dress (like Kate Middleton) or your wedding date sewn into your dress.
9. Garter
Find or make a garter out of blue ribbon and lace for a splash of bold colour. This “something blue” is a very fun one, as it’s a secret until the reception.
10. Bridal Cover-ups (Bolero, Capes, Shrugs, Cardigans and Shawls)
A little blue cover-up could be your practical yet stylish “something blue.” Add some coverage during your ceremony or wear it as a statement piece for the reception.
11. Handkerchief
Embroider your new initials in blue in one corner.
17. Wedding Ring
Wear this sentimental color every day when you add a touch of blue sapphires to your wedding ring. Remember the blue sapphire sparkler worn by Kate Middleton!
Have you thought of your wedding’s “something blue” yet? I hope you now have enough ideas for adding something blue to your wedding!
