{Daily Wedding Bits} Just Engaged? Here’s 12 Things to Do After You Get Engaged!

  1. Call your relatives.  Share the happy news with a personal call to each of your relatives. It’s usually a serious no-no to mass text or post right after your engagement. Instead have your family help get the word out then share it to the world via text or social network.
  2. Have your Ring Resized. Make this appointment ASAP so you can show off your engagement ring without the wait and worry of losing a loosely fitting ring. The last thing you want is to lose the ring an hour after you get it.
  3. Insure your Ring.  It's usually the most inexpensive to add it to an existing homeowners, renters or vehicle policy but if you don't have this, simply ask your jeweler what options are available.  It's a good idea to call your insurance provider to see if an appraisal or any specific paperwork is necessary.
  4. Set a Date.  Even if it's not THE date, having a general idea will give friends & family something to mark on their mental calendars - like "We're thinking Spring of 2012" or "We like the idea of next Fall."
  5. Create a Wedding Website or Blog.  This is a great way to keep family & friends "in-the-know" and updated with the wedding plans.  You can post the link to your wedding venue, directions, maps, hotel information for out-of-town guests, your photos, the story of how you met & how he proposed.
  6. Daydream! Dream a lot.  Start by buying wedding magazines, attend bridal showsm watching wedding movies and subscribing to lots of wedding blogs.  Learn what you do & don't want for your wedding.  Here's a quick list of a few of my favorite blogs to get your wedding-wheels turning:   OnceWed, Ruffled, Style Me Pretty, 100 Layer Cake, Green Wedding Shoes, Postcards & Pretties, Snippet & Ink and of course the Louisville Wedding Blog.  Clip or print anything that inspires you and save them for your inspiration board.
  7. Plan a Personal Celebration.  Plan a date with your fiancé.  Relax and enjoy you’re your moments of being engaged.  Keep it fun and avoid wedding planning topics.
  8. Get a Planner.  Not the wedding planner person, (well not just yet).  Just a datebook or calendar  or  iphone app to keep yourself organized.  Buy a binder or notebook too for all the clippings of inspiration you'll be finding in wedding magazines & blogs.
  9. Decide to Use a Coordinator or go it Alone. Consider all the wedding professionals you will be negotiating & communicating with and decide if it's in the budget to hire a professional to keep you on course and help alleviate extra stress. If you're a super-busy couple, hire a full-time wedding consultant to help you prepare your entire event, from the announcement to the honeymoon. You can also hire a part-time consultant to devise a wedding blueprint -- including budget, schedule, and lists of good vendor and site choices -- before you launch solo into the preparations. Another option is a day-of coordinator (which we definitely recommend), who will make sure everything goes as planned on your wedding day.
  10. Start a Wedding Savings Account.  All weddings no matter how simple are costly. In the end, dollars, not dreams, are a main determining factor for the size and style of your wedding.  Open a basic checking or higher interest acct. and set aside a certain amount each paycheck.
  11. Ask your Parent for Their Guest Lists.  It's extremely helpful to ask if they would prioritize their lists in tiers in case they go over your maximum.
  12. Chill Out & Have Fun.  Don't forget to relax and enjoy this one time season in life.
