Choosing your Louisville Wedding Venue {five+ohTwoThursday Tips}

Here at the Louisville Wedding Blog, I understand and believe that, while inspiration is a key element to designing a spectacular wedding, so are practical advice and preparation tips as well.  Thus, I’ve started a new feature that will appear every Thursday— 5+02 Thursday Tips.  This will be a weekly collection of seven tips on the various stages of the wedding planning process. I hope that this will help out those planning their wedding because everybody knows (or at least the majority), planning a wedding isn’t easy!

To start, I’ll be highlighting seven tips for choosing your wedding venue. In my opinion, your choice of the wedding venue is everything! It dictates almost all the aspects of your wedding: the number of guests, the overall sense of style of the wedding (casual vs. formal, contemporary vs. old world), the style of wedding dress you can wear, the motif or colors you can use,  and the time of year your wedding can be held.  Your venue forms the backdrop of your entire wedding celebration; thus, it can be considered the most important decision you will make.

There are lots of advice and tips out there on choosing a wedding venue, so I just highlighted seven tips which you may not have come across:

1) “I know I live in Louisville, but I really had dreamed of a wedding set on a beach.” – Consider the limitations of your area.
Before, looking for venues, a lot of couples would have usually gone through a lot of wedding blogs to know exactly what type of wedding they wanted.  Some want to it to be held in a private estate on the mountaintop or on a luxurious yacht on the river or on the coast on the beach. You know, like some of those beautiful Colorado or New York or Miami weddings you would see over the blogs.
If you notice, when you start looking for actual venues in Louisville, you’ll quickly realized, there are no mountains or yachts or beaches here. So, first step to do is to examine the types of venues available to you and built a dream wedding with them in mind.  Instead of spending months looking for a venue that didn’t exist based on your imaginary dream wedding.

2)   “Aunt Mae won’t mind sitting on Uncle Joe’s lap.” – Count those guests.
Before you set foot out that door, have on mind your expected number of guests who you think will attend your wedding.  Understanding this element is crucial since many venues have capacity limitations that will determine whether or not they remain on the “short list”.  Also, be aware of “maximum capacity” versus “comfortably seated”.  Many venues will provide a maximum capacity number (“We can stack our tables up to three tables high to accommodate 250 guests.”), but that number is usually more than what is “comfortable” for the space.

3) “Why I can’t have hot pink and leopard as my colors?!” – Consider the design of the space.
Event spaces come with a design aesthetic—in simple words, they are not blank slates.  If you choose a venue that has a distinct design, make sure to choose a color palette and overall styling concept that works well with the design. For example, if you’ve chosen a classic ballroom with warm tones, such as deep brown and creams, I don’t think neon pink and leopard would be the top color choices.  If you are decided on having neon pink and leopard in the wedding, choose a wedding location that will best accommodate those color combinations.

 4) “What’s the difference between ‘burgundy’ and ‘maroon’? Aren’t both just red?” - Evaluate your bride personality.
Do you want to personally hand pick every single element of your wedding?  Are you looking at doing DIY wedding projects? If you answered yes to these questions, it would be good to choose a venue that allowed you to bring in all of the design elements yourself - linens, centerpieces, d├ęcor. Wedding venues that simply provide a space for your wedding would be an perfect choice.
Does wedding planning make your head spin?  Does the thought of discussing the subtle differences between burgundy and maroon make you dizzy?  If so, you would benefit from an “all-inclusive” venue.  Several venues have relationships with pre-selected vendors for a variety of wedding elements (i.e., linens, centerpieces, floral, music, catering, cakes, etc.) and then offer these services to the couple in a package for an all-inclusive price. All the couple has to do is show up on their wedding day.

5) “So running water isn’t included in the venue price.” – Beware of budget busters.
When comparing prices and budgets for various venues, make sure you are comparing ‘all-inclusive prices’.  Many venues give potential customers a cost per head in response to a budget inquiry, but make sure you know what is included in the cost.  Is it just dinner?  Does it include drinks?  What about appetizers?  Is the dance floor included or will you have to rent one? What about chair covers or additional chairs?  Are there cake-cutting or corkage fees?  What about parking?  These factors can greatly inflate your all-inclusive price for securing the venue.  You don’t want to choose a venue based on price only to find out later that these additional costs raised your overall price above a venue that you ruled out because you thought it was too expensive.

6) “The early bird really does get the worm.” – Start early.
Popular wedding venues can book up to a year and one half to two years in advance.  So don’t delay!

7) “You want to have your wedding where?!” – Think outside the box.
Think outside of the box when considering wedding venues.  Weddings nowadays can be held almost anywhere, so don’t limit yourself to the list of venues that appears in your internet search.  Museums, historical places of interest, parks, restaurants, airport hangers, farm houses and even parking garages have all provided beautiful backdrops for weddings.  If you’re running out of ideas with the venue choices in Louisville, remember to think creatively and you’ll be surprised at what you can come up with.
