Planning a Kentucky Derby Wedding: Part 1 - Choosing your Wedding Venue

Photo by Greg Blomberg Photography  via Style Me Pretty

Kentucky is known as the Home of the world-famous Kentucky Derby. It is usually held in May in Louisville, but regardless of when you plan to have your wedding, you can always have a Derby inspired wedding any day of the year. In fact, you don’t have to be from Kentucky or be a passionate fan of horses.
All you need is love for fine Southern tradition and elegant parties. And the love of fabulous hats! The Derby is not only about the horse races, it’s about food, fashion and tradition. Sounds like a great classic wedding theme right?

The first thing on our list is the venue. Decide where you will have the wedding or reception. You can hold your wedding and reception at Churchill Downs in Louisville, horse parks or farms with and decorate with an upscale country motif. Here are a few options where you can have your Derby-inspired wedding.

Historic Churchill Downs would make a very memorable backdrop for your special day. Situated at Gate One of this world-famous racetrack is the just-renovated Kentucky Derby Museum. The Kentucky Derby Museum is available for engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, wedding ceremonies and receptions. They offer two options for wedding receptions. The Great Hall, their largest reception hall, features equestrian imagery walls, and a 360° screen which is great for presentations. Their Carl F. Pollard Gallery accommodates smaller receptions, and features views of the Churchill Downs entrance from five arched windows. This facility offers customized catering services by Clements Catering, Inc., which can accommodate a variety of table arrangements, and set-up plans. The Museum offers flexible rental agreements and professional guided tours where you can reserve a designated area or the entire facility.

If you can't afford the Derby Museum or it is booked, there are other alternative options. Check out this list below of some alternatives. You can also see this list of other wedding locations in the Louisville area where you can hold your wedding/reception. Regardless of where your wedding is held, you can have a Kentucky Derby theme. It’s all about decorations and details. I’ll share more of decoration and other wedding inspirations in my next post on this wedding theme which will be coming soon.

Gingerwoods is a newly-renovated event hall featuring an outdoor terrace for wedding reception with a rustic elegance and pastoral backdrop that creates a comfortable ambiance making it a perfect choice for a Louisville outdoor wedding venue. It is located in Prospect, a northeastern suburb in the Greater Louisville area. This event venue was built in the mid-19th century and has an adjacent chapel (Greencastle Baptist Church) for the ceremony. Gingerwoods has a 3,000 square foot event space that can accommodate up to 180 of your guests seated. With a 2,400 square foot deck, overlooking acres of preserved land, one could also utilize the East Lawn, when additional space is needed. Gingerwoods’ terrace offers guests scenic views of the pastoral horse ranch approximately 200 yards from the hall. The event venue supplies table and chairs, but does not offer catering. Though, they will gladly assist and refer you to some of their approved caterers.

Bluegrass Country Estate Kentucky B&B is a unique and exquisite estate away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but convenient to Louisville and Lexington. It is located on part of what was originally planned as a 5,000-acre Arabian Horse Farm development. The major facilities are now a Thoroughbred Training Center and there are beautiful horse farms throughout the area. They have recently opened their venues to accommodate weddings and I think that it is a great wedding location option for both horse lovers and country lovers.
